Why you should ask your fans to reply

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Hey there profitable musician!

When you’re planning your next release or deciding whether to try a new kind of show, how much are you guessing about what your fans want?

You can ask them. And I think we sometimes forget that!

I’ve talked before about giving your fans a place to connect with each other. Those friendships can give people another reason to stay involved with your music.

But that same community gives them a place to talk with you, too.

You know I’m a big believer in asking fans to reply to your emails. Besides helping you get to know them, replies can signal to email providers that you’re someone they know and interact with. That can help it understand where your messages belong (NOT spam or promotions), though it doesn’t guarantee the Primary tab.

Still, keeping up with a bunch of separate email conversations takes time. And for some fans, writing you a personal email might feel like a bigger deal than leaving a quick comment.

Inside a community, you could post two possible album covers and ask which one catches their attention. Or float the idea of an acoustic listening party and find out who’d actually want to come.

Someone else’s comment might remind a fan of something she wants to ask. You can answer a question once, where everyone can see it, and let the conversation continue.

That’s one reason I like Heartbeat for this.

On Facebook, your fans can pop into your group to answer a question and get pulled into a completely different conversation before they ever respond. With Heartbeat, they’re entering a space dedicated to your community, without the distractions (and sometimes negative vibes) of the Facebook feed. And they still have the convenience of a mobile app, so joining the conversation from their phone is easy.

You can also offer courses and paid memberships right alongside those conversations. If you teach or coach, you can give buyers access to specific discussions and live sessions within the same community. Your fans have one place to participate, and you have one place to keep the conversation going.

Your fans get more opportunities to participate, and you get to hear what they’re excited about before you spend weeks creating something you hope they’ll want.

Take a look at Heartbeat and try it free for 14 days (plus get 20% off for 3 months with code PROFITABLEMUSICIAN)

Keep asking for email replies. And when you’re ready for an ongoing conversation, give your fans a place where it’s easy to join in.

Always in your corner,
<3 Bree

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN: FEM FRIDAY EDITION October 23, 2026 Happy FEM Music Friday! When my friend Tiamo was performing in San Diego, it felt like hundreds of musicians were all competing for the same four or five decent stages. The venues had all the leverage. There was always another musician who wanted the gig, and was willing to do it for little pay. And even when you landed a show, there was still the work of getting people through the door. Another round of post, emails and begging friends...
