HOW TO BE YOUR OWN MUSIC BOSS
Even if you have another job (or other full-time responsibilities).
In your music career, you are your own boss. No one (other than you) is telling you what to do when.
Whether you've got all day to work on music, or just a few hours each week, you need a system to keep yourself accountable and on track....or nothing will get done.
On December 31, you'll look back with regret wondering where the time went.
Here's a framework to make sure that doesn't happen 👇
1. Set a meeting with yourself each Sunday night or Monday morning.
📅 PUT IT ON THE CALENDAR or it won't happen.
Review the previous week: what went well and what can you improve on? What was on your list that didn't get done? What prevented you from doing it? Should you put it on the calendar for the coming week?
2. Decide on 3 main focus areas for the coming week.
Are you:
- Working to build a new skill?
- Writing for a new album?
- Rehearsing for a gig?
- Building out a marketing plan?
Pick your 3 broad categories of focus for the week. Now block out time on your calendar to work on them.
Even if you work or have family responsibilities, you can find pockets of time to work on music.
3. Each morning, look at the block of time you have to work with that day.
📆 Pick out 1 thing you can do in each of your focus categories during that time.
For Example: If you only have an hour after work, you could spend:
⌚10 minutes free writing to spark songwriting ideas
⌚ 20 minutes creating and scheduling social media posts about your upcoming gig
⌚ 30 minutes practicing for the gig
The 🔑 is that you MUST have a system.
When there isn't a boss breathing down your neck or the motivation of a promotion or annual review...
And life and family responsibilities are overwhelming and can easily crowd out your time for music...
Approaching each week and each day with intention and a system is the only way you'll get your goals accomplished. So you can look back on 2025 feeling proud of how much you've done in music!
