😱what if the Fear means you’re finally taking your music seriously?

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN:

FEM FRIDAY EDITION

June 6, 2025

Happy FEM Friday!

There’s something that comes up all the time in my community, and I see it whether someone is just starting out, coming back to music after a long break, or stepping into a new phase of their career. It’s fear.

Not a subtle hesitation, but a deep, sometimes paralyzing fear. The kind that makes you question whether you should even keep going. The kind that makes you wonder if your time has passed or if you’re cut out for this at all.

That fear often shows up just as you're about to take a real step forward.

If you’ve felt that lately, I want you to know something very clearly:

You’re not off track. You’re not unqualified. In fact, you might be right on time...

Fear often appears right when we begin to take ourselves seriously. When we stop treating music like a hobby or a someday project and start building the systems, skills, and confidence that move us forward.

That’s when the doubts get loud, not because you’re doing it wrong, but because you’re finally doing it right.

Throughout the five stages of music career growth I outline in my Musician’s Profit Path framework, this theme of fear never really disappears. It just evolves.

At the Foundation Stage, fear tells you that you’re not ready to be visible. You’re still building your brand, your voice, your audience. And showing up at all feels scary. But that fear means you care about doing it well, and that matters.

In the Promotion Stage, it’s about putting yourself out there more boldly, asking for the sale, booking better shows, sharing your music widely. Fear can convince you to shrink back, but that moment is actually the one that calls you to step up.

As you move into Expansion, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed or exhausted. Fear may tell you to slow down or give up altogether. But what’s really happening is that you’re bumping into the edge of what your current systems can support. That discomfort is simply a cue to bring in help, not retreat.

Even when you start Automation and building more sustainable income streams, fear might suggest you’re being too business-minded and losing your creative mojo or that you’re not “big” enough for that kind of strategy. But choosing to treat your music career with that level of intention is what makes it sustainable in the first place.

And finally, in the Profession Stage, fear can creep in through imposter syndrome. You’ve come this far, and yet the question becomes whether you can maintain it. That’s natural. But now you’ve built the tools and experience to answer that fear with truth and momentum.

The presence of fear at any stage isn’t something to get rid of. It’s something to notice.

It’s your signal that you are reaching for something more aligned, more visible, more honest.

So the next time that fear rises up—before a show, before a release, before an email you’re nervous to send—I want you to ask yourself, what if this fear means I’m finally taking myself seriously?

If the answer is yes, then keep going. That means you’re doing the real work. The meaningful work. The kind that leads to growth, fulfillment, and connection.

I’m proud of you for being in it. And I’m here with you every step.

Always in your corner,
<3 Bree

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN WEEKLY NEWSLETTER June 25, 2025 Hey there, Profitable Musician! One of the biggest myths I see floating around the indie music world is this idea that you need a manager to be legit. Or that once you find the right manager, everything in your career will finally click. But here's the truth: having a manager too early can actually slow you down. And not being ready when the right one comes along? That’s a missed opportunity. In my recent podcast interview with Janice Shen...

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN: FEM FRIDAY EDITION June 20, 2025 Happy FEM Friday! Can we talk about something that doesn’t get nearly enough airtime? That creeping feeling that maybe you’re not cut out for this. That voice that whispers, “Who do you think you are?” when you go to post something about your music or share a new video. The pit in your stomach when you see someone else doing what you want to do, only better, faster, with shinier graphics and more followers. If any of that sounds familiar,...
