The post that bombs (but creates superfans)

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Hey there, Profitable Musician!

A few months back, I recorded a podcast episode about navigating physical and mental health challenges while still showing up for your music career.

I hesitated before hitting publish. It felt vulnerable, maybe even too personal.

But you know what happened...

🎧Pivot Points: Redefining Success In Music

The messages started pouring in. DMs. Emails. Comments. Not with hearts or clapping hands. With full paragraphs.

Women telling me they listened to the whole thing...twice. That they finally felt seen. That I had inspired them to press on, despite their challenges.

That episode didn’t “perform” by online standards. No crazy spike in downloads. No flood of new followers. But it mattered.

Contrast that with my most “popular” posts online—posts that reinforce something my audience already believes about themselves. They hit the algorithm just right. Spike in views. Lots of likes and “Yes!” comments. But do they shift anyone’s behavior? Probably not.

And that’s the truth about music and content right now:

The stuff that changes people usually isn’t the stuff that sparks the algorithm.

Viral content plays it safe. It reflects your audience back to themselves.

Content that transforms someone? That’s risky. It might be messy. It might go against the grain. But that’s the stuff that lingers. That people replay. That sparks actual life change.

I see this with songs too.

That catchy little tune you wrote in an afternoon? Might rack up views.

But that honest, gut-wrenching ballad about your grief or your addiction or your faith crisis? That one will get a message from a stranger saying:
"I thought I was the only one."

The truth is, you need both.

The mirroring content gets you discovered. The transformational content gets you remembered.

So post the fun reels. Share the “me too” memes. You'll get more followers.

But don’t shy away from the stuff that scares you. That makes you feel exposed. That feels heavy on your chest just a bit.

And that might just be your music. Or your message. Or your story.

Don’t underestimate what one honest piece of content can do.

Because someone out there isn’t looking for entertainment. They’re looking for a lifeline.

So I'll say it again. You need both.

The feel good, "I get you" posts will attract more followers so that more people will get to experience the life-altering ones.

Always in your corner,
<3 Bree

Women of Substance didn’t start as a grand business strategy. It started because I wanted to hear more women’s voices while I worked. Back when I was Director of Finance at Opera Pacific, I spent a lot of hours in spreadsheets, budgets, board reports, and all the very glamorous things that come with keeping an opera company financially afloat. This was before Spotify and smartphones, even before iPods, when you couldn’t just pull up almost any song in the world from the little computer in...

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN: FEM FRIDAY EDITION May 29, 2026 Happy FEM Music Friday! I remember once asking my pastor’s wife a question after church. Her husband had told a funny little family story in his sermon. It was sweet and harmless, the kind of story that made everyone laugh because we could picture the whole scene. Still, I wondered how that worked behind the scenes. So I asked her, “Does he check with you before he shares those stories?” She smiled and said, “Always.” I loved that answer,...

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN WEEKLY NEWSLETTER May 27, 2026 Hey there, Profitable Musician! I wrote my song Healing Waters, the title song from my first album, from a hospital bed. I had been so sick I could not keep anything down, and there is a kind of weakness that strips away your normal ways of coping. You are just there, in your body, aware of how badly you need help. That is where the song began. I cried out for healing because I needed healing. It was immediate and deeply personal. The kind of...
