What to talk about in a "non-release" season

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN:

FEM FRIDAY EDITION

August 8, 2025

Happy FEM Friday!

One of the questions I hear all the time from artists in my Fan Attraction Bootcamp is this.

“Should I talk about stuff outside of my music on social media? Does anyone really care about that stuff? And is it even relevant?”

I get why they are asking. It is easy to think that fans only want to hear your songs or see your latest gig announcement.

And when you're in a non-release season, you're wondering if you post about more "everyday happenings" if fans will even want to hear about it.

Maybe you worry that sharing your daily life, your thoughts, or your struggles will seem self-centered, or, that it will be met with crickets.

But the truth is, the personal parts of your journey are not just relevant. They are essential for building real connection with your audience...

🎧"Should I Only Talk About My Music On Social Media?"

📻Add These Songs To Your Playlist

Fans are not looking for perfect artists who only show up to promote their next single. They are looking for people they can relate to, people whose values and stories resonate with them on a human level.

When you let people see you as a whole person, not just a musician, you create connection points. Little bridges between you and them.

And some of these connection points will resonate so much that it creates a mirror effect, They feel seen and they see you. And there's a recognition there.

That familiarity is what makes them stick around and root for you.

When you use content to intentionally, but subtly, broadcast specific aspects about yourself, and your audience see themselves in those aspects, they sit up and take notice. They feel "at home".

The main types of connection points include:

Identities: What categories do you fall into? Examples: mom, ex-corporate girl, 80s music fanatic, cat lover, etc.

Values: What do you hold sacred? These can be about the way you live your life and your moral compass.

Beliefs: What causes do you feel strongly about? Give your fans something to rally around in addition to your music.

It is not about oversharing or turning your feed into a diary.

It is about giving people a glimpse behind the curtain. A snapshot of your creative process. A moment of your everyday life that reflects your values. A funny story that makes them smile.

These are the connection points that make your music more meaningful to them.

I have seen artists post a polished music video that barely gets noticed, but then they share a simple photo of their messy home studio or a vulnerable story about struggling with grief or life hurdles, and their audience floods the comments with encouragement and “me too” responses.

That is the power of personal connection. It makes your audience feel seen, and it makes your music matter more because it is coming from someone real.

Now, I also want to speak to those of you who are thinking, “But Bree, I am a private person. I don’t want to share personal stuff online.”

I hear you. You do not need to share your deepest secrets to build connection. What I suggest is creating a simple sharing plan that feels safe and intentional for you.

Choose two or three connection points you are comfortable with. This could be your creative process, the things that inspire your songwriting, your favorite local coffee shop, or even stories about the people who have encouraged you in your music journey.

You get to decide what feels right. You can build meaningful connections without feeling like you are putting your whole life on display.

As you start sharing these small moments, you will notice what resonates. You will find your rhythm. And you will see that the things you thought were too ordinary are often the things your audience appreciates the most.

You don’t have to figure it all out right away. Start small. Choose one connection point and share something this week. Little by little, you will build an audience that truly cares about you and your music.

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN: FEM FRIDAY EDITION August 29, 2025 Happy FEM Friday! If back to school packed your calendar a little tighter, you are not alone. New drop offs, new pick ups, lunch packing, after school shuffles. It is a lot. When life feels squeezed, it is easy to put your music on the back burner. But here is a positive and more productive way to look at it. A new season brings fresh energy and new routines. You do not need more time. You need a few small pockets where you learn a...

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN WEEKLY NEWSLETTER August 27, 2025 Hey there, Profitable Musician! I am a sucker for a chance to win. In high school, I called into the radio and won Huey Lewis tickets, a river rafting trip, movie tickets, albums, and even $100 for knowing "the hit of the day." I once even won a silk plant (what high schooler doesn't need a silk plant). I did not even want it, but I knew the trivia answer and couldn't help myself 😆. My fingers just spontaneously dialed the number, like a...

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN: FEM FRIDAY EDITION August 22, 2025 Happy FEM Friday! When I was growing up, I measured time in school years instead of calendar years. Honestly, I never really stopped. My husband was a doctoral student when we got married and later became a professor, so our family schedule has always revolved around the academic year. Every late August feels like a fresh start for me, and that rhythm has shaped how I approach goals in my life and in music. Back-to-school season doesn’t...
