the missing ✨ in your “Should I do it?” decisions

PROFITABLE MUSICIAN WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Hey there, Profitable Musician!

“As you start to walk on the way, the way appears.”

I have loved that Rumi quote for years, mostly because it keeps proving itself true in my own life in ways I could never have planned.

There was a season not that long ago when a door opened for me that I never saw coming. I was asked if I would consider stepping into the role of worship director at a church.

I had been a touring musician. I had volunteered on worship teams. But leading one week after week? That felt like a stretch.

I had no proof of concept. I didn’t know if I could do it. I didn’t even know if I would like it.

Honestly, the idea of the same rhythm every week made me nervous. I had spent years as a freelancer, building variety and flexibility into my life on purpose.

So when the opportunity came, I hesitated. I actually said no at first...

But something kept tugging at me. After sitting with it and praying through it, I realized this wasn’t a door I needed to fully understand before walking through it. It was a door I needed to trust.

That was almost four years ago now. And here’s what surprised me. I love having a regular gig. I love the consistency.

And it turns out that so many of my skills as a performer found new life there. Years of programming setlists. Creating emotional moments. Reading a room. Inviting participation. All of that translated in ways I could never have predicted from the outside.

I could not have seen that from the crossroads.

This is something I see over and over again with indie musicians. We want certainty. We want reassurance. We want to know it’s the right path before we take the first step.

But music rarely works that way.

In music, there are countless paths. Some are traditional. Some are unconventional. Some look nothing like what we imagined when we first picked up an instrument.

And often, we don’t truly understand how our skills can be used in new and meaningful ways until we are already moving.

You can stand at the crossroads and analyze forever. You can gather opinions. You can wait for confidence to magically appear.

But clarity almost never comes before action. It comes because of it.

Yes, intuition matters. I believe deeply in listening to that inner voice. But intuition usually gives you direction, not a detailed map.

The data you need to decide whether something is truly aligned often only shows up after you take a few uncomfortable steps into the unknown.

This is exactly how I want you to think about opportunities like what I've been talking about all week, sync music licensing (or anything else for that matter).

Maybe you’ve had that quiet thought that your music could work for TV or film, but you’re not sure. You don’t know if it’s your lane. You don’t know if you’d enjoy the process. You don’t know if it would lead anywhere meaningful.

What if instead of needing certainty, you gave yourself permission to explore?

What if you treated it as a six month season of focused action rather than a lifelong commitment you have to get right?

You would learn so much about your writing, your work habits, your sound, and your strengths. Even if you decided not to pursue sync long term, the clarity you’d gain would ripple into every other area of your music career.

That’s the part we forget. No aligned action is wasted. Movement creates information. And information creates confidence.

If you’re waiting to feel ready, confident, or certain before you move, I want to gently challenge you today.

Start walking. Take the step that feels a little uncomfortable but still aligned with who you are and what you care about.

The way really does appear once you’re in motion.

If you've been feeling that tug to explore music licensing as an income stream and fanbase builder, today is the last day (really, this isn't offered again in 2026) to Join The Art Of The Song Pitch with Chris SD from Sync Songwriter Get all the details here.
