FEM FRIDAY EDITION

November 21, 2025

Happy FEM Friday!

I can still picture it like it was yesterday. My daughter was 4 years old, sitting on the living room floor working on a giant Elmo puzzle, and I was at my little desk in the middle of the common living space at my computer.

I was between tours, catching my breath, and thinking about all the incredible women I’d met on the road. Songwriters pouring their hearts into music that no one outside of their limited local area seemed to be hearing.

The number of female artists being played on radio and SiriusXM back then was not even close to what it should have been based on the talent that was out there. And that really bothered me.

That day, as my daughter fit the final puzzle piece into place and gleefully proclaimed her victory, I realized I had my own missing piece too.

I felt a sudden, overwhelming pull to do something about the lack of opportunities for women in music, to build something that would shine a light on all the talented women I knew were out there working hard to create and promote their music.

A place where music with substance could finally be celebrated. That was the moment, Thanksgiving weekend 2007, that I decided to turn Women of Substance into something real.

But the story actually started years earlier.

Back in 2000, before streaming existed, before iPods even, I had created an online radio station just for myself. On a whim, I called it Women of Substance.

It was basically my pre-Spotify playlist of female artists I’d discovered in person and on the internet. I loved their music, and I wanted to hear it while I worked at my day job.

That little station was never meant to be public, but people somehow found it and started listening.

A few years later, after my first album came out and I started touring again, the idea kept tugging at me. I was meeting so many talented independent women and kept thinking, why aren’t they on the radio? Why can’t more people hear them?

So in November 2007, I decided to rebuild that old station into a real platform. I began taking submissions from female artists, curating shows, and finding ways to make it sustainable.

Slowly, Women of Substance grew from my personal side project into a respected platform for women around the world.

Now, 18 years later this Thanksgiving weekend, we’ve recorded over 1,800 episodes and featured tens of thousands of independent female artists and female-fronted bands.

Women of Substance has become one of the longest-running female-focused music shows in existence (maybe the longest, I don't know), and it’s still growing.

But at its heart, it’s the same as it was that day in my living room. It’s about women who have something meaningful to say through their music.

And in honor of our 18th anniversary, and as part of our "5 Days of Deals" for Black Friday, I'm doing something I've never done.

I'm offering a limited number of our Center Stage advertising spots for 2026 (includes ads on the show for 1 month plus lots of other perks you can see here) at a one-day-only discount - Center Stage for the price of the DIVA package ($70 off!) which means you get double the advertising power for the same price.

This will be our 1st deal to kickoff our "5 Days of Deals" on Monday November 24 and it will only be offered for 1 day or until all 24 spots are taken. So if you want to take advantage of it, click the button below to join the Early Bird List so you don't miss it on Monday.

And I want you to know that when you purchase a sponsorship package, you’re not just promoting your music. You’re helping sustain a platform that was built for you.

Women of Substance exists because I believed women’s music deserved to be heard. And 18 years later, I still believe that more than ever because YOU keep submitting amazing music each and every week.

Always in your corner,
<3 Bree

Yaz Williams - Change The World

Sweet friends, welcome. My songs are stories, moments and parables, inspired by the movements of my heart and the ebbs and flows of life and faith. Influenced by alternative folk artists, obsessed with dissonant harmonies, and drawn to equivocal poetry, I pray you would find delight in uncovering mysteries in the melodies and words I have to share. May your eyes be opened to see the glory that surrounds us.
I am a Kiwi-Aussie, now based in San Antonio, Texas with my husband Callan Brown, my son Silas, and our sweet pup Jude. I released my first album, Something Like A Secret in 2021, and my new record Tomorrow Mind will be rolling out through 2025!
